In-Place will develop a new financial model to solve for commercial displacement challenges in minority communities.

Partnering in survey distribution gives you free access to the datasets created by &Access, detailed below.

THE NEED

In gentrifying communities, many minority-owned retailers, restaurants, and other neighborhood-serving businesses are at risk of displacement due to the businesses’ lack of property control, inability to reinvest, and limited financing opportunities, among others. In-Place will better understand these needs and create a new solution.

RESEARCH PRODUCED

National Displacement Risk Dashboard

Identifying zip codes with gentrification indicators and ideal retail redevelopment conditions with national public and private data

Small Business Displacement Survey

Complementing nationally available data with the perceptions and realities of minority-owned retailers, restaurants, and other neighborhood-serving businesses

Replicable Fund Model

Developing a patient capital fund to support the acquisition and improvement of commercial properties occupied by minority retailers, restaurants, and other neighborhood businesses in gentrifying communities.

Access’s founder, Bobby Boone, hosted a lively launch event to share more about how you can support the research and obtain its findings. During the event, he hosted Jason Foster (Executive Director of Destination Crenshaw), Ja’net DeFell (Director of Community Desk Chicago), and Anika Hobbs (Owner of Nubian Hueman) for a discussion on why In-Place’s focus on solving commercial displacement challenges is so essential for cities, communities, and entrepreneurs of color.

Jason Foster is the President and the chief operations officer at Destination Crenshaw, which commissioned over 100 Black art/culture projects to fight against rapid gentrification in the district. Jason previously served as the Director of Strategic Partnerships at River LA, an organization focused on revitalizing communities along the LA River.

Ja’Net Defell is Director of Community Desk Chicago, an affiliate of the Chicago Community Trust. In her current role, Ja’Net coordinates capital access for community-based real estate development projects. Additionally, as part of her ecosystem work, Ja’Net manages community-based capacity building programs and supports city-wide innovative capital solutions including community investment vehicles to advance equitable wealth-building opportunities.

Anika Hobbs is the founder and lead curator of Nubian Hueman, which curates unique goods, fashion, and art by designers representing the global Diaspora. Recently she has successfully expanded her business while fostering collective interaction, community development, and global responsibility through a fresh and artistic platform.
